A blast of light 'can soon kill breast cancer'

Tue-Jun 30, 2009

London / Press Trust of India

Here's some good news for those suffering from breast cancer -- scientists have developed what they claim is a new treatment which could destroy tumours with a blast of laser light. In fact, a team of British surgeons has developed the revolutionary treatment for breast cancer, which involves no surgery, can be carried out in only a few minutes and doesn't harm healthy cells.

Breast cancer surgeon Mo Keshtgar, who led the team at the Royal Free Hospital, said: "The key appeal is that it attacks and destroys cancer cells while retaining viability of the surrounding normal cells. "Breast cancer can be particularly traumatic, with more invasive treatments leaving physical and emotional scars.

Our treatment will keep the structure of the connective tissue intact, meaning the breast doesn't become deformed." The researchers plans to start clinical trials of the "photodynamic therapy" on 20 patients this year. During PDT, a drug is injected into the patient's bloodstream that makes the
cancer cells extremely sensitive to light.

According to them, when a low-level laser beam is shone at the cancer through the skin, the cells self-destruct -- it could even offer an alternative to radiotherapy for some women, the Daily Mail reported

'Trojan horse' therapy helps combat cancer

30 Jun 2009, 0543 hrs IST, REUTERS

SYDNEY: Australian scientists have developed a “trojan horse” therapy to combat cancer, using a bacterially-derived nano cell to penetrate and disarm the cancer cell before a second nano cell kills it with chemotherapy drugs.

The “trojan horse” therapy has the potential to directly target cancer cells with chemotherapy, rather than the current treatment that sees chemotherapy drugs injected into a cancer patient and attacking both cancer and healthy cells. Sydney scientists Jennifer Mac-Diarmid and Himanshu Brahmbhatt, who formed EnGenelC Pty Ltd in 2001, said they had achieved 100% survival in mice with human cancer cells by using the “trojan horse” therapy in the past two years.

The scientists plan to start human clinical trials in the coming months. Human trials of the cell delivery system will start next week at the Peter MacCullum Cancer Center at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and The Austin at the University of Melbourne. The therapy sees mini-cells called EDVs (EnGenelC Delivery Vehicle) attach and enter the cancer cell. The first wave of minicells release ribonucleic acid molecules, called siRNA, which switch off the production of proteins that make the cancer cell chemotherapy resistant.

A second wave of EDV cells is then accepted by the cancer cell and releases drugs, killing the cancer cell. “The beauty is that our EDVs operate like ‘trojan horses’. They arrive at the gates of the affected cells and are allowed in,” said MacDiarmid.
