PUNJABI movies in our local cinema circuit are rare but this
rarity may soon become a thing of the past with the screening of
Mera Pind (My Home) in our cinemas.
The movie which is
currently playing in several cinemas here was brought into
Malaysia through collaboration between its worldwide distributor
Reliance Big Pictures and its local distributor Lotus Five Star
AV Sdn Bhd.
Mera Pind has set the record as being the widest ever
released Punjabi movie in the world.
According to Reliance Big Picture’s Preetham Rebello, the
movie was brought into Malaysia given the large Punjabi Sikh
community here. Rebello added that Mera Pind had grossed
RM456,970 in Britain, RM605,525 in the United States and Canada,
RM121,059 in Australia and RM10,236 in New Zealand in its
opening weekend.
The story which is set in a village in Punjab is about a Sikh
from the West who goes back to his motherland and works to bring
change there. It also questions why the Punjabis are a
successful community in many parts of the world but yet many are
poor in Punjab.
